Trying to hold down one career is a grind, but holding down two requires a serious hustle! In between throwing down award-winning performances with Hollywood’s rich and famous Asher D runs his own record label and mini media empire. We caught up with Ashley on his way to see Prince in concert at the 02 Arena and he told us about living the British hustle.
5 years ago when you stepped out of Her Majesty’s you were written off, along with the whole So Solid movement. Now with Hollywood films and BBC mainstream roles to your credit you’re a recognized black face in TV and film. Do you ever take a minute to reflect and think ‘is this really happening to me?’
Yeah, a lot. I’m pretty grateful for my success with my career since I’ve come out of prison. A lot of people - including me - thought it would never get this far and that it would never happen. The best thing for me though is not to over-think about it because it could end any time. That’s what going to prison taught me: you could have everything and lose it quickly.
What would you say were the key turning points? Prison, amongst other things. My kids as well; I’ve got 3 kids. Growing up and maturing. When I was in So Solid I was 17 at the time. I was just turning 18 when we had all the success with the album and the single. It’s hard for people to understand that. To me it was like going from one life to another pretty much overnight. That’s hard for people to deal with especially us. We were coming from the street, we didn’t have money like that. And it can be very overwhelming. (continue...)
